Since the Foundation's inception, more than 4,600 grants awarded to artists and arts organizations—totaling over $19.4 million—have provided opportunities for creative exploration and development. FCA supports individual artists and collectives working in dance, music/sound, performance art/theater, poetry, and the visual arts through eleven grant programs: Grants to Artists, the John Cage Award, the Merce Cunningham Award, the Helen Frankenthaler Award for Painting, the Ellsworth Kelly Award, the Roy Lichtenstein Award, the Robert Rauschenberg Award, the Dorothea Tanning Award, the Cy Twombly Award for Poetry, the C.D. Wright Award for Poetry, and Emergency Grants.
Foundation for Contemporary Arts distributed $3,751,743 in 2020. Eighteen Grants to Artists of $40,000 each, including six named awards—a total of $720,000. In addition, a $40,000 John Cage Award was made; a $40,000 Ellsworth Kelly Award was made, and the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation underwrote grants of $10,000 each to support two other exhibition proposals; $78,743 was disbursed for 46 Emergency Grants; $2,796,000 was disbursed for 1,398 relief grants through the Emergency Grants COVID-19 Fund; $22,000 was disbursed to eleven mutual aid funds; and $35,000 was awarded in Contemporary Visual Arts Scholarships.
